BOOK OF THE MONTH

 While unloading the cases of books that I received since volunteering to be the club’s new librarian, I noticed a Tillandsia book that is written in Japanese as well as English.

   The title of the book is  "New Tillandsia Handbook"  It is a soft-cover book of134 pages. The authors are Hiroyuki Takizawa, MD and Hideo Shimizu.  And this appears to be a second edition with the first being published in 1992. Not sure when this book was published or when the club acquired it but the cost was  $25.00 dollars.  If you’re looking to read a book on Tillandsias this isn't for you.  On the other hand, if you’re looking for  a book with lots of pictures, then  this book will put a smile on your face.  I stopped counting the pictures at 200 after only 59 pages. Many of the photos in the book have been taken while on field trips the authors took to Mexico, Paraguay, Ecuador and Florida .  All of the

photos of the Ecuadorian Tillandsias were taken on a trip the authors made with Dennis Cathcart, owner of Tropiflora Nursery.  As the author said., "the objective of the book is not to educate, but to try to capture and

convey the extraordinary beauty of the of the Tillandsia species. "

  After looking through this book I would have to say his objectives have been met. This book will be on display at our January meeting.
