Book of the Month This month we will bring to the meeting a book by Ron Parkhurst titled “The Book of Bromeliads” published in 2000. As he owns Hanalei Nursery, one of the main nurseries in Hawaii he adds “Hawaiian Tropical Flowers” to the title with a full section of them at the end of the book. It is a heavily color illustrated book, remarkable not only for the number of photos it contains but for the extraordinary quality of the illustrations making it a perfect tool for identification. The sharp details of the inflorescences as well as the varying color palette of the foliage are a treat to the eye. Do not miss the section on Vriesias where you could appreciate the special color tones of the unique hybrids produced by David Shiigi another notable Hawaiian bromeliad personality. But this book is not only a photo collection; sections on history, growing and cultivation, on artistic arrangements or landscaping would give you many ideas on how best to care and display your plants. |
