Although habitat destruction is a continual hazard for bromeliads in south Florida, the most immediate and serious threat they face is from an invasive, exotic weevil that is killing them on protected as well as private lands. The Mexican bromeliad weevil is referred to as the "Evil Weevil" by bromeliad growers and enthusiasts throughout Florida, because of the devastating effects it has had on bromeliads in private collections and in natural areas throughout south Florida. Current management efforts are concentrating on classical biological control and the collection of seeds of native bromeliads to ensure their survival. To learn more go to
