B. ‘Miz Mollie’, an old Beadle hybrid of Amoena v. rubra x ‘Muriel Waterman’ is one of the largest non-pendant Billbergias. The very intense color of the plant contrasts with the almost green flower. Sepals are light green with just an edge of a darker green like the color of the petals.
With the well liked B. ‘Hallelujah’ (vitata ’Domingos Martins’ x amoena ’Ed MacWiliams’) on the left, Don Beadle obtained an enduring hybrid. It did not miss the show. The photo on the right correspond to one of the light colored Billbergias: ‘Grace Goode’. Its tender inflorescence is almost completely light green lacking the intense violet of the ‘Hallelujah’ petals.
Finally, after almost six years waiting for it to bloom, Beadle’s hybrid 1464, soon to be named ‘El Zorro’, exploded with most striking colors. Note the bright red pedicels and sepals crowned by violet petals against the black leaves. |
